SXSW Attendees enjoy Kaalo CHARM

Super cool seeing the reactions of SXSW attendees when they played around with the Kaalo Charm 3D interactive messaging app. Here is a Dell laptop being displayed in an exhibition setting. Users were fascinated by how real it was and could not stop giving us ideas of all the possibilities they saw in this technology. It was very reassuring.

Primary takeaway from SXSW 2023

Primary takeaway from SXSW 2023 – designers will be at the epicenter of the inevitable world of AI and XR.
Design is the interaction of humans with the world around us. It is all encompassing and has existed since civilization. The design toolbox changes with context and environment but the essence of design does not change. The essence being – the ability to understand the necessary workflow required and the skill to create an experience that satisfies an intended purpose.
SXSW has been a showcase of top of mind technologies and trends. Around 18k attendees and over 350 sessions curated from the global community and spanning the world’s of tech, film, music, and beyond, each of which ignite conversation and collaboration. It’s no secret that AI and XR is going to radically change the way humans live. It’s imminent. A large number of sessions and exhibits arrested to this projection summarizing that the industry is obviously unsure and is making every effort to rapidly align and strategize. The uncertainty of what AI will replace, assist, or completely redefine is very concerning. Content creation, ownership, regulation, security, and consumption are complex areas that will see significant changes. Education, medicine, military and all lifestyle verticals will undergo a revolution.
This is going to be a series of posts to actually dig into the details but what is very clear is that the context of our environment is radically changing once again. New workflows, new experiences, new tools, new channels and delivery mechanisms, new consumption styles and expectations – all these define our new context. Humans who are trained to understand this uncertain new context and deliver experiences in them are “designers”. Designers will be more in demand in this new context than ever before. In fact designers will have to do the heavy lifting of teaching the industry and handhold corporations in navigating this unclear path forward.

What does millimeter accuracy of the AR Assistant mean?

What does millimeter accuracy of the AR Assistant mean? Every screw, every latch, every cable, connector, tape and part is super imposed exactly on the computer system complete with infographics and animations. That means the directions and instructions leave no room for human error. It takes the guesswork out and points specifically at the part in question, even in a crowded component layout. Complex configurations of a server, laptop or desktop are no more a concern for the lay person. The simple step-by-step AR instructions are all they have to follow making it a perfect DIY tool. What is remarkable is that Dell’s customers and technicians do NOT need an expensive headgear to use this tool. No AR glasses necessary. The Dell AR Assistant is designed to work with the tool that the whole world carries – the phone.

Cool technologies that are ubiquitous and easy to use have instant impact on businesses and their customers.

Professionally designed DIY technology

“Do-it-yourself” or DIY is a term associated with consumers since the early 1900s and is the method of building, modifying or repairing things by oneself without the direct aid of professionals or certified experts. Today DIY is assisted with technology that is professionally designed by experts. Consumers are not afraid to use the guided step-by-step process because it is reliable, accurate and very easy to use. The Dell AR Assistant is one such tool that uses Augmented Reality to help their customers resolve computer challenges remotely. The attached video illustrates accurate infographics used to walk customers through complex procedures in the most simplest of ways.

The Dell AR Assistant is a perfect blueprint for the Right To Repair

The Dell AR Assistant is a perfect blueprint for the RIGHT TO REPAIR. Right to repair refers to the concept of allowing end users, business users as well as consumers, of technical, electronic or automotive devices to freely repair these products in case of mechanical or technical failure.

Four requirements are of particular importance:

1. the device should be constructed and designed in a manner that allows repairs to be made easily;

2. end users and independent repair providers should be able to access original spare parts and tools (software as well as physical tools) needed to repair the device at fair market conditions;

3. repairs should by design be possible and not hindered by software programming;

4. the reparability of a device should be clearly communicated by the manufacturer.

The goals of the right to repair are to favor repair instead of replacement and make such repairs more affordable leading to a more sustainable economy and reduction in electronic waste.

Millimeter accuracy of Kaalo’s AR solutions

Millimeter accuracy of augmented information on complex products separates Kaalo from the rest. Seamless display of animated infographics on the exact hardware location is an industry rarity.

Here is a quick peek into the Dell AR Assistant’s precise and robust solution. The halo animation informs the user which part needs to be removed or installed. The technology takes care of locating the part, screw, latch, cable and connectors leaving no room for misinterpretation or human error. All this without the use of any fancy headgear. The phone in your pocket is all you need, making this accurate technology – ubiquitous.
